The third round of the Australian Open produced some top-four upsets in the men’s and women’s brackets. Perhaps the biggest stunner was Gael Monfils’ upset of No. 4 Taylor Fritz on the men’s side.

Monfils dropped the first set, 3-6, before winning the next three four a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over the fourth-seeded Fritz. With that win, which was sealed with a rocket of an ace, Monfils joined Roger Federer as the only men aged 38 or older to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open since 1988.

Fritz was having issues with his foot throughout the match and had to be looked at by a trainer on the bench. With Fritz now out of the tournament, the American men’s chance at ending their 22-year Grand Slam title drought just got a little worse.

In a twist of fate, Monfils’ wife, Elina Svitolina, upset No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini on the women’s side. That match took place on the very same court where Monfils took down Fritz.

Svitolina also did things the hard way. She dropped her first set, 2-6, and it appeared as though Paolini might roll to a fourth-round appearance. However, Svitolina swung the tide in her direction during the second set before crushing Paolini in the decisive third set for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.

Elswhere in the tournament, 19-year-old American Learner Tien continued his magical run with a victory over Corentin Moutet. Following a marathon first set, Tien was able to finish the job in straight sets for a 7-6 (12-10), 6-3, 6-3 win. He will face Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.

Meanwhile, world No. 9 Andrey Rublev suffered a shocking first-round defeat at the hands of teenager Joe Fonseca. The 18-year-old from Brazil was making his debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam. Additionally, No. 6 Casper Ruud fell to another teen in 19-year-old Jakub Mensik in the second round.

No. 7 Jessica Pegula was upset 7-6, 6-1 at the hands of unranked Olga Danilovic in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament. Pegula had reached the Australian Open quarterfinals in three of the past four years, and made it to the US Open Final in 2024.

U.S. star Coco Gauff pushed through to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Leylah Fernandez. Gauff will now go head-to-head with Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.
